Shem, Noah And Abraham All Lived Together For 39 Years

noah and abraham, ancient fathers, Noah, Shem, Abram, Nimrod, abrahan, enoch, MethuselahFew people have ever stopped to consider that Noah and Abraham (and even Shem and Nimrod) were contemporaries. I certainly hadn’t! But as I have taken the time to dig deeper into the scriptures many things are beginning to come to light. The book of Jasher has forced me to explore some very interesting trails and answered many of my questions.

Too often, because of my laziness, I have skipped “the begets”; and because of that I have stayed trapped in my ignorance. I say trapped because those that do not know history are doomed to repeat it and learning about the confrontations between Abram and Nimrod can help to preserve our lives in the future, both near and eternal.

That which has been is what will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun. (Ecc 1:9)

Did Noah and Abraham know one another?

Yasher reveals that not only did Noah and Abraham know one another, but that Abram lived with Noah and Shem for 39 years.

Noah was 600 years old when the flood came and he lived 950 years.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. (Gen 7:11)

And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died. (Gen 9:28-29)

From the birth of Arphaxad, two years after the flood, until the birth of Abram it was only 292 years. Noah lived 350 years after the flood and Shem 500 years. Abram’s life overlapped Noah’s life by 58 years.

This is the sum of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years. (Gen 25:7)

Ha – check that – Abraham only lived to be 175, so Shem outlived Abraham by 35 years. So interesting – that means that both Isaac and Jacob were taught by Shem, and Eber!

Noah And Abraham, Even Shem And Nimrod Were All Contemporaries

Jasher 28:24 And it came to pass in those days, in the hundred and tenth year of the life of Isaac, that is in the fiftieth year of the life of Jacob, in that year died Shem the son of Noah; Shem was six hundred years old at his death.

Noah and Abraham, even Shem and Nimrod were all conteporaries, Genesis 11, age chart of Hebrew fathersHere is the chart in a 10mb PDF format. Click the following link to view it or right-click and “Save file as” to down-load it to your system. Age Chart

This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood. After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Salah.

Salah lived thirty years great, , and begot Eber.

Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.

Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.

Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug.

Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor.

Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.

Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. (Gen 11:10-26)

Noah was Abraham’s great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather!

Did they know each other? Where else would Abram have learned Yehovah’s statutes judgments, and ordinances? Does Israel’s Elohim (lawmaker and judge) ever change? Does His word endure forever?

Of all the people who were alive at the end of the antediluvian  (pre-flood)Â world it was Noah who was chosen by Yehovah to repopulate the next world. Why? Because He walked with God/Elohim, his only lawmaker and judge!

Then Yehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. (Gen 6:5)

This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with Elohim. (Gen 6:9)

Noah And Abraham Lived Together For 39 Years

And concerning Abram we read in Jasher chapter 9.

4 Haran [Abram’s oldest brother] was forty-two years old when he begat Sarai, which was in the tenth year of the life of Abram; and in those days Abram and his mother and nurse went out from the cave, as the king and his subjects had forgotten the affair of Abram.
5 And when Abram came out from the cave, he went to Noah and his son Shem, and he remained with them to learn the instruction of the Elohim and His ways, and no man knew where Abram was, and Abram served Noah and Shem his son for a long time.
6 Abram was in Noah’s house thirty-nine years, and Abram knew Yehovah from three years old, and he went in the ways of Yehovah until the day of his death, as Noah and his son Shem had taught him; and all the sons of the earth in those days greatly transgressed against Yehovah, and they rebelled against him and they served other elohim (lawmakers and judges), and they forgot Yehovah who had created them in the earth; and the inhabitants of the earth made unto themselves, at that time, every man his elohim; elohim of wood and stone which could neither speak, hear, nor deliver, and the sons of men served them and they became their elohim.

My next blog will contrast Abram, Noah and Shem with Nimrod, a man whose very name in Hebrew means “Rebellion!” It is the spirit of Nimrod that is manifested in all of the governments of the Gentiles to this very day.

  1. Michael , is there a passage in the Talmud that identifies Sarai with Iscah, daughter of Abraham’s deceased brother Haran? Also, great post.

    1. Hi Dr. Jay!

I have not read the Talmud but it does make sense that Sarai and this strange person Iscah, are one in the same. This understanding would give the following, and confusing, verse a bit more sense.

And took Abram and Nahor for themselves women: Abram’s woman’s name was Sarai, and Nahor’s woman’s name was Milcah, the daughter of Haran Milcah’s father and Iscah’s father. (Gen 11:29)

      This verse has many problems.
      – It does not identify who the father of Sarai is.
      – It gives Milcah’s father’s identity twice.
      – It does not say if Iscah is a son or daughter of Haran.

It appears that this verse should speak of Milcah and Sarai as the daughter[s] of Haran. Which, in fact, they were.

According to Jasher, Lot, Milcah & Sarai are all children of Haran and all 40+ in age when Abram and Nahor took their nieces (Haran’s daughters) for their women.

Jasher 9:1 And Haran, the son of Terah, Abram’s oldest brother, took a woman in those days.
2 Haran was thirty-nine years old when he took her; and the woman of Haran conceived and bare a son, and he called his name Lot.
3 And she conceived again and bare a daughter, and she called her name Milca; and she again conceived and bare a daughter, and she called her name Sarai.

Jasher 12:44 And at that time Nahor and Abram took women unto themselves, the daughters of their brother Haran; Nahor’s woman was Milca and the name of Abram’s woman was Sarai. And Sarai, woman of Abram, was barren; she had no offspring in those days.

  2. Hi again Michael,

Are you certain that Abraham and Noah lived con-curently for 39 years?

    Birth: Abram in 1948AM, 1813CJ/BC, +131yrs = 1944BC, in Terah’s 70th year.
    Elapsed # yrs = + 58yrs ? – 58yrs? ___________ – 58yrs?_______-+58yrs?
    Death: Noah in 2006AM, 1755CJ/BC, +131yrs= 1886BC, in Terah’s 128th year.

So, do we have a 19yr ‘difference’ at this point in our Sequential Biblical Event Timeline?———-No!—No!

OK! Now I understand what 39 year period of the life of Abram with Noah really is! You are recounting the 39 year period of the life of Abram, from Abram’s 10th year, when he ‘left the cave’, to his 49th year, when Abram returned to Terah, (119th).

    This 39 year period:
    Abram: at 10 years in 1958AM, 1803CJ/BC, +131yrs = 1934BC. ( also birth of Sarai).
    ——————————+39yrs—-39yrs———————-39yrs!
    Then 39 years to—— 1997AM, 1764CJ/BC, +131rs = 1895BC. (also death of bro-Nahor).

Ok! that is, in my opinion, the correct computation for these Biblical Events.

    Sorry, for my initial mis-undstanding.

    1. Thanks Bob – interesting comment. You are WAY ahead of me on all those dates. My studies have not lead me in that direction. Keep up the great work!

      1. Thank you Michael,

I shall send you, by snail-mail, a photo-copy of The Book of Jasher, in which I have ‘posted’ the ‘dates’, I have calculated, each sequential biblical event, in Our Holy Scripture, from ‘Expulsion’ of our primal spiritual ancestor, Adam, to the death of Joshua.

Should you find my work on biblical chronology valid and worthy of being published on your own web-site, I trust that you shall use it to the glory of Our Good God, —for all,— and forever!

    2. If Abram, studied from Noah and Shem, and lived at that time How did he get through the flood if he didn’t come on the boat with Noah, and he was to multiply the earth (sands of the sea, stars of the heavens and dust of the earth. and the whole earth was covered with water??? I am not understanding how he lived in this time, Noah wasn’t a descendant of Abraham, So how did he multiply the earth?

      1. Oh Lois, your are confused. Please look closely at the “age Chart” on this page. See when the flood was and how long Noah lived after it. Clearly Abraham is in the line of Noah through Shem. Noah was Abraham’s great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather! And Shem, Salah and Eber outlived Abraham and taught both Isaac and Jacob Yehovah’s ways.

  3. Hello Do you know the exact relation Shem is to Abram , it’s very important we are blessed because of Abram , but we are blessed because of Shem had it not been for the generations of Shem we wouldn’t have Abram to blessed because of him … Thank you for your help

    1. The “Age Chart” which I share in the article is perfectly correct. So Shem was Abraham’s great, great, great, great, great, great, great-grandfather.

Thanks for your comment Danielle. 🙂

      Michael

  4. This article is very good.. it is very important to know how Abram got knowledge about true God in the midst of idolatry. I got lots of understanding through this article. Thanks.
But is book of Jasher a valid book?

    1. Thank you for your comment SaiMon!

I love Yasher and have discovered more in Torah because of Yasher than any other book. I consistently hear my Heavenly Father’s voice in it. Here is what I have to say about the book of Yasher.

      1. Hi Michael,

I’m very content that you have recognized the important value of The Book Of Jasher.

In my opinion,—IF Saint Jerome, (about 415AD-420AD), had NOT restricted HIS choice of over 280 Jewish Texts that WERE available to HIM when he “chose the 66 books for inclusion in HIS “Vulgate Bible”, this Book of Jasher would have “followed” The Book of Judges.—BUT, only because The Book of Jasher,—does NOT mention ANY reference to the “Coming of Our Lord”, Jesus Christ,—HE did NOT!

However, The Book of Jasher IS mentioned,—TWICE,— in Our Scripture.

        Robert
        Monaco

        1. I appreciate your comment and all of your work Robert. I love the book of Yasher. I have learned more Torah because of what I found in Yasher than any other book.

However the only Elohim that is returning is Yehovah. This man, this demigod, known as “Jesus Christ” is what I consider the “golden calf of the modern age, who was given to us by the Catholic church. If you are interested in why I say this then please read the “Torah 201” series on my sight. I have many articles there to help break this false image in the minds of others and it is my hope that these articles will expose the lies which we have learned. http://weareisrael.org/torah-201/

          Warm regards,

          Michael

        2. But Jasher was not determined by the Councils to be canonical, either. St. Jerome submitted to the ruling of the Councils that the canon was to include not only the 66 books he originally listed, but also Tobit, Sirach, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, the Wisdom of Solomon, and the Book of the Prophet Baruch, as well as portions of Esther and Daniel which are not included in the Hebrew Bible. Now, this does not mean that Jasher is not accurate history, but it does mean that it is not God-breathed Scripture.

        3. “Good-breathed scripture”? Augh, we have so much to unlearn and relearn. These Catholic councils that you speak of added books to the Hebrew’s scriptures with a total disregard and disrespect for all things Hebrew and then had the gall to call their perverted additions the “New Testament”. These so-called “God-breathed” books have harmed the hearts of men for centuries by turning them away from Yehovah’s eternal and unchanging words and ways. We have learned lies, worthless and unprofitable ways.

I hear Yehovah’s voice constantly in the book of Yasher.

Please consider reading an article I recently added to this site. It’s called the “New Testament Origins“.

  5. Dear Michael, I found your chart very interesting and educational but I do have to bring your attention to the following scriptures; Genesis 11:32 and Genesis 12:4. These scriptures clearly tell us that Terah, the father of Abram was 205 years old when he died in Haran and that Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran. Therefore when you subtract 75 from 205 you get 130. Therefore, Terah was 130 years old when he begat Abram and not 70 as your chart implies and thus has an effect upon your chronology? Please can you confirm this with me?
I look forward to your reply.

    1. Hi Kevin! Thanks for the note. I think you are making the assumption that Abram was born in Haran, when in fact he was born 50 years earlier in Ur. Here is a timeline that I think will help give you deeper understandings. I call it “

  6. Hi Michael

Perhaps you have mistakenly sent me this email,—as it is apparently addressed to:— Mr. Gavin Cox.

However Michael,— I do agree with Gavin,—that Shem, the third son of Noah, DID live 35 years after the death of Abraham, (at 175yrs—AND Nimrod TOO!—at 215yrs).

    That is:

Death of Abraham & Nimrod in 2123AM, 1769BC.
    Then, another 35yrs to d.Shem + 35yrs / – 35yrs.
Shem died in his 600th year,— 2158AM, 1734BC.

EXACTLY 502 years after the FLOOD, in 1656AM, 2236BC.
    Then, another——————————–+502yrs / -502yrs:
Shem died in his 502nd year AFTER in 2158AM, 1734BC.

I trust that you shall find “confirmation” of these “dates” in Vol. #1 of “Chronicle” that I sent you.—Was that over a year ago?—Already?

    Best wishes,

    1. Hi Robert!

You must be subscribed to the comments that come from my blog. I did change my blog from 33 to 35 yesterday after seeing Gavin’s comment.

The work which you sent to me is amazing, in fact I was reviewing it again just a few weeks ago. I was looking for when the next jubilee might be.

      Michael

      1. Hello Michael. I just came across your page and reading about some of the information here. I have some questions. Not so much about the times that Noah and his sons lives that overlapped into Abrahams years. More aptly to the sojourners that dwelled with the Israelites during the Exodus. The ideas that there was 1 law for the native born Israelite and one for the sojourner (alien) that dwelled amongst them. It’s my understanding that these are those coming out of Egypt w/ the Israelites who were not Israelites but believed and came into the faith; not by blood or rather the physical seed but became the spiritual seed of Abraham.

        1. Thank you for your comment Wayne. I think many are confused because they have never been taught what a Ger [often translated a alien, sojourner and other terms] and an Ezrach [native-born] actually are and how they arrived at that status. The links above should shine some light on your question and allow you to see how this information effects us today.

  7. Hi again,—Michael,

As you can see,—for yourself,—on Page 119 of my “Chronicle”,—The 71st Jewish JUBILEE, from Exodus, shall begin “at sundown” of JDay2,464,574,—That is a Tuesday, 1 Tishri,— OR,— 3 September 5926AM, (Actual), 2035AD.

Because of the 131 year ‘difference’ with our Western Calendar,—5795-J, 2035AD.

    1. Good observation Deanna!

I can only assume that there are other considerations. I used to think that the boys were triplets. I no longer think that.

Here are some things to consider.

Ham was the youngest son (Gen_9:24), Japheth the elder (Gen_10:21), which makes Shem the middle son.

Yasher 5:16 And Noah was four hundred and ninety-eight years old, when he took Naamah for a wife.
17 And Naamah [582 years old] conceived and bare a son, and he called his name Japheth, saying, God has enlarged me in the earth; and she conceived again and bare a son, and he called his name Shem, saying, God has made me a remnant, to raise up seed in the midst of the earth.
18 And Noah was five hundred and two years old when Naamah bare Shem, and the boys grew up and went in the ways of the Lord, in all that Methuselah and Noah their father taught them.

Ham is not mentioned at all here. The first time Ham is mentioned in Yasher is here.

      1. Hi Michael, Deanna and All,

When the Book of Jasher mention the birth of 3 sons to Noah, at 500yrs & Maamath at 498yrs, we can calculate:

Birth: Japheth, 1st born in 1558AM, 2336BC, in 500th year of Noah.
Birth: Ham, 2nd born in 1557AM, 2335BC, in 501st year of Noah.
Birth: Shem, 3rd son born in 1558AM, 2334BC, in 502nd year of Noah.

        Does this answer Deanna’s quest?

        1. Michael,

I have just ‘polished-up’ two, old study papers: “The Hebrew Kings of Judah and Israel” and “The Gordian Knot” of the Hebrew Kings, thru the death of Ezra, in 3448AM, 444BC.

The 390 years of “The Divided Kingdom”.

And “The Gordian Knot” is from the death of Elisha, for 484 years, to the death of Ezra.

          Death: Solomon, in 2964AM, 928BC, to 3354AM, 538BC. Then, 390 years to:
“The Return Decree” of Cyrus II, Emperor of Persia, in his 1st year over Babylon, that gave permission for Zerubable and “All Israel”, to return to Jerusalem.

Seventy years after the First Temple was “burned” on the ‘eve’ of 9/10th Av, in 3306AM, 586BC ,the Second Temple was ‘completed’ and’dedicated’ in 3376AM, 516BC, exactly 928 years ‘after’ Exodus, in 2448AM, 1444BC, when,— All Israel— ‘left’ Egypt to wander 40 years in the desert when, after the death of Moses, on 7 Adar,—All Israel,—“Crossed the Jordan”, with Joshua into,— “The Promised Land”,— in the first Month, Nisan of 2488AM, 1404BC.

“The Gordian Knot” of The Hebrew Kings.—This paper covers 484 years from the death of Elisha, in 3098AM, 794BC, to the death of Ezra , in 3448AM, 444BC.

  8. If anyone is still answering this…
I want to know why this differs from the book of jubilees. I’ve just started reading Jashar, already finished jublilees. Jubilees says that Noah died in the thirty third jubilee, An Abram was born in the thirty ninth jubilee? Im so confused!

      1. Brother Michael, can you please bless me whit sending me the graph timeline you speak about? I am trying to learn all this awesome information.

    1. Was Abraham’s time in Canaan and Egypt a kind of spiritual Egypt (i.e. The kingdom had not come together yet, like it did after they left Egypt)?

The timeline below took me years to figure out; and it was not until I discovered Yasher that I was able to complete it.

0 Abram receives the prophecy. “And it was in the fifteenth year of Abram’s dwelling in the land of Canaan, which is the seventieth year of the life of Abram, and Yehovah appeared to Abram in that year and he said to him, I am Yehovah who brought thee out from Ur Casdim to give thee this land for an inheritance. Now therefore walk before me and be perfect and keep my commands, for to thee and to thy seed I will give this land for an inheritance, from the river Mitzraim unto the great river Euphrates. (Jasher 13:17-18)

+ 5 Abram departs from Haran a second time when he is 75 years old – “So Abram departed as Yehovah had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.” (Gen_12:4)

+ 25 “Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.” (Gen_21:5 )

+ 60 Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. (Gen_25:26)

+130 Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?” And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” (Gen 47:8-9)

+210 And at the end of two hundred and ten years, Yehovah brought forth Israel’s seed from Egypt with a strong hand. And Israel’s seed traveled from Egypt and from Goshen and from Rameses, and encamped in Succoth on the fifteenth day of the first month. (Jasher 81:4-5)

      430 Years Total

And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years–on that very same day–it came to pass that all Yehovah’s hosts went out from Egypt’s land. (Exo 12:41)

The Jacob’s seed (sons of sons of sons) did not leave Egypt until the partook in they Passover and became Ezrach men, Israel. I talk about Israel, the Ezrach men, and the Ger who dwell with them in my Born Again series

This means that Abram received this prophecy on the 15th day of the first month; Passover day, 430 years earlier!

The 2nd video you suggested I watch has some was interesting but trying to make Shem Melchizedek is erroneous. Melchizedek is not a name of a man, it is a position of authority. The melchi-zedek is a compound word which mean King of the Righteous or the Righteous’ King; he is the highest ranking member of Yehovah’s people (men) on earth; he is the one who carries the rod of THE Elohim as the sign of his position. Moses carried this rod which was passed down from Joseph through Reuel. This is the rod which Moses uses a dozen times in the Torah.

So the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” He said, “A rod.” And He said, “Cast it on the ground.” So he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail” (and he reached out his hand and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand). (Exo 4:2-4)

Then Moses took his woman and his sons and set them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took a rod of THE God in his hand. (Exo_4:20)

And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with a rod of THE God in my hand.” (Exo_17:9)

  9. This is my most important discovery of the day. I’ve often wondered how the creation story and a couple of others passed down from Adam to Noah to Abraham and beyond. I never bothered to add up the ages etc. This chart and accompanying explanations make a lot of sense. This is a confirmation that the Tanahk is not a fable. Thank you

  10. Which book of jasher is being referred to here? Where would one find the oldest book of jasher? I have read that forgeries have been written in the 1800s.

  11. Hi Michael Intersting article and appreciate your work. As a non Jewish christian person looking to search deeper into the Word, I found this knowledge very important. But, I am pained by one of your comment criticising JESUS and calling names. Coming from a highly idol worshipping society, I and my family would not have known ELOHIM, the only GOD, except through the revelation and peron of JESUS. I believe this is the case with millions of believers worldwide who are non Jews. With all due respect. I did not believe you have the right to condemn CHRIST who has been the way for millions, if not billions of people to know YAHWEH as the one true GOD. Please continue to do the good work you are doing with passion, but it is my humble request not to lower your own respect and the respect for your work by wading into areas of unbelief. But, apart from that I respect the knowledge you are trying to impart.

    1. Hi John,

I called myself a Christian for most of my life and until I began to actually study the words which Yehovah spoke through Moses and His other prophets I was completely lost in the doctrines and traditions of men which I had previously been taught. For me, coming to the knowledge of the truth was that MUCH harder because of all the lies I had learned and previously “learned” and accepted as truth. The Catholic church (really the church of Satan; did you see that the pope an all His Cardinals were arrested for crimes against humanity?) has done more to turn men and women away from their created purpose before Yehovah than any other institution. They, are the ones responsible for adding the NT writing to the Hebrew’s scriptures, not the Hebrews! They are responsible for the death of billions. Pope Leo X (1513-1521) was quoted as saying, “How well we know what a profitable superstition this fable of Christ has been for us.”

It is because of the lies we have learned that I put together all my writings under the Torah 201 tab in an attempt to help men and their women to develop deeper understanding concerning this man, Jesus. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for writing,

      Michaerl

    1. Yehovah made man!

Yehovah, Elohim planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. (Gen 2:8)

Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it, “He did not make me”? Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”? (Isa 29:16)

Everyone who is called by My name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.” (Isa 43:7)

So Yehovah said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” (Gen 6:7)

“For ask now concerning the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether any great thing like this has happened, or anything like it has been heard. (Deu 4:32)

I have made the earth, and created man on it. I–My hands–stretched out the heavens, and all their host I have commanded. (Isa 45:12)

“You are My witnesses,” says Yehovah, “And My servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. BEFORE ME THERE WAS NO GOD FORMED, nor shall there be after Me. I, even I, am YHVH, AND BESIDES ME THERE IS NO SAVIOR. (Isa_43:10-11)

We have already addressed the issue of the plural form elohim being the qualitative plural. Many have tried to assert that the plural language used in the creation of man is the foundation for the Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

Genesis 1:26 And Elohim said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

In other words, they believe that the plural language of this text is a discussion between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Others assert that the Creator is speaking to the angelic host and other spiritual beings. This thought is usually supported by using Psalm_8:5 as the proof text.

Psalm 8:5 For thou hast made him (man) a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

The problem with this argument is the fact that the word for “angel” mal’ach) does not appear in this text. Instead, the Hebrew text actually reads,

Psa_8:5 For thou hast made him a little lower than elohim, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

We may note that in the whole of the creation narrative there is no mention of the creation of angels or other spiritual beings. Some postulate that they were created at the time of Genesis 1:1 with the heavens, but this is an argument from silence and cannot be defended.

To refute the Trinity debate we need only look to the creation narrative’s next verse.

So Elohim created man in His own image, in the image of Elohim created He him; male and female created He them. (Genesis 1:27)

Clearly all of the third person masculine form verbs indicate that the person acting is singular in nature. If YHWH is in fact the Elohim of creation, as identified by the numerous Scripture references listed earlier, then we must likewise accept the testimony of His own revelation that He is in fact ONE.

Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O Israel: YHWH is our Elohim, YHWH is one.

Therefore, the use of the plural name Elohim and the plural language in Genesis 1:26 is merely the qualitative plural of and not an indication of a heavenly host or a tri-part nature of the Creator. If YHWH is one, then He alone created all that is seen and unseen, and is, therefore, the sovereign owner and ruler of the universe.
