The book of Yasher includes many details that are not available to us in Torah; details that helps Torah make sense, and it will do it again many times in this Sabbath teaching.
We saw last time, that in the 102nd year after Israel’s seed came, with our families, to Egypt that there arose a new king who did not know us.
Today we begin with the marriage of Amram, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi to Jochebed, THE daughter of Levi, Amram’s aunt. Jochebed arrived in Egypt in her mother’s womb, so her age helps us determine how many years after we arrived in Egypt that their children (Miriam, Aaron and Moses) were born. And Yasher fills in much detail concerning their births as well.
Right after the birth of Miriam and Aaron, Pharaoh has a dream and Balaam the son of Beor interprets his dream for him.
Yasher 67:18 And Balaam the son of Beor answered the king and said unto him, This means nothing else but a great evil that will spring up against Egypt in the latter days.
19 For a male child will be born to Israel who will destroy all Egypt and its inhabitants, and bring forth the Israelites from Egypt with a mighty hand.
Next Balaam suggests that Pharaoh take counsel concerning what is to be done with Israel to prevent the birth of a male child who will deliver Israel; and he calls his two counselors. Look at who one of them is.
Yasher 67:24 And the king sent and called his two counselors Reuel the Midianite and Job the Uzite, and they came and sat before the king.
Reuel is Moses’ future father-in-law and also a seed of Abraham through Katurah; he is a man of good understanding who counsels the Pharaoh to leave Israel alone or send them away. He gives Pharaoh a long history about those who contended with Jacob and his seed and finishes with these words.
Yasher 67:37 … likewise from the hand of all the kings of Canaan who had come together against him and his sons to destroy them, and Yehovah delivered them out of their hands, that they turned upon them and smote them, for who had ever stretched forth his hand against them with impunity?
Good advice, but Pharaoh did not receive it. As a result Reuel left Egypt and took with him the the rod of Elohim which Moses, like all Yehovah’s Melchizedek’s, carried. But that is a story for another day. 🙂
Yasher 67:41 And when Pharaoh heard the words of Jethro he was very angry with him, so that he rose with shame from the king’s presence, and went to Midian, his land, and took Joseph’s stick with him.
Balaam then suggests that Pharaoh drown every male child born to the Hebrews.
Yasher 67:49 51 And the king ordered a proclamation to be issued and a law to be made throughout the land of Egypt, saying, Every male child born to the Hebrews from this day forward shall be thrown into the water.
A Male Child Will Be Born Unto Us
And because of this proclamation many men in Israel now sent away their women to prevent any future births, and Amram also did this. But after 3 years his daughter, probably 3 or 4 years old, prophecies.
Yasher 68:1 And it was at that time the spirit of Elohim was upon Miriam the daughter of Amram the sister of Aaron, and she went forth and prophesied about the house, saying, Behold a male child will be born unto us from my father and mother this time, and he will save Israel from the hands of Egypt.
2 And when Amram heard the words of his daughter, he went and took his woman back to the house, after he had driven her away at the time when Pharaoh ordered every male child of the house of Jacob to be thrown into the water.
3 So Amram took Jochebed his woman, three years after he had driven her away, and he came to her and she conceived.
4 And at the end of seven months from her conception she brought forth a male child, and the whole house was filled with great light as of the light of the sun and moon at the time of their shining.
5 And when the woman saw the male child that it was good and pleasing to the sight, she hid it for three months in an inner room.
Look at that! Jochebed is 130 years old and Moses was a preemie (probably about 4 pounds), one who would most likely not survive; but in fact was used by the Elohim on the mountain to save Israel from their oppressors.
This has huge implication for our future as well. Moses’ physical birth is a shadow picture of what Yehovah is going to do after the spiritual birth of His servants (men) who are right now learning to make themselves wholly His. They, like Moses, are the male child who will be born before the woman (Israel) goes into the wilderness.
“Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says Yehovah, “that it shall no more be said, ‘Yehovah lives who brought up Israel’s seed from the land of Egypt,’ but, ‘Yehovah lives who brought up Israel’s seed from the land of the north and from all the lands where He had driven them.’ For I will bring them back into their land which I gave to their fathers. (Jer 16:14-15)
“Before she was in labor, she gave birth; before her pain came, she delivered a male child. Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day? Or shall a nation be born at once? For as soon as Zion was in labor, she gave birth to her sons. (Isa 66:7-8)
And so Moses is born, kept safe for 3 months, put into an ark, found by Bathia (Pharaoh’s daughter) and Yehovah orchestrates the whole situation so well that Jochebed even got paid for nursing her own son for 2 years. This is important because we will soon see that the sons/seed of Levi were the only tribe of Israel who did not work for Pharaoh. Hmmm – could that be why they were chosen to be the men closest to Him?
Yasher 68:32 And Moses was in Pharaoh’s house, and was unto Bathia, Pharaoh’s daughter, as a son; and Moses grew up amongst the king’s children.
Here is the rest of the story.
