Does the Creator have a particular dress code in which he expects all the inhabitants of the earth to adhere to? Is there a dress code given to Israel in His Torah, His instructions on how all His men (and their families) are to conduct their lives?
The Creator’s commandments, statutes, judgments and ordinances were given to His men who are scattered among every nation; they are for all His people, past, present and future. Yehovah’s eternal and unchanging ways will prevail until heaven and earth pass away. They work for the Aboriginal in Australia, the Tahitian in the South Pacific, the Eskimos in the far north, the Arab in the middle east, the Africans, the Europeans, they work for you and they work for me.
“Praise (הלל, hal-lal) Yehovah from the earth, you great sea creatures and all the depths; fire and hail, snow and clouds; stormy wind, fulfilling His word; mountains and all hills; fruitful trees and all cedars. And all livings things – cattle, creeping things and flying fowl; kings of the earth and all peoples; princes and all judges of the earth; both young men and virgins; old men and young boys – They shall praise (הלל) the name of Yehovah, for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven. And He has exalted the horn of His people, the praise of all His saints (חסיד, khaw-seed) – Israel’s seed, a people near to Him. Praise (הלל) Yehovah!” (Psa 148:7-14)
הלל or hal-lal’ is the Hebrew word from which the English word halleluyah comes from. It is often translated as “praise,” but a more accurate translation seems to be “shine!”
Jeff Benner in his Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible says this about הלל.
H1984 הלל
Shine: To shine through ones actions or words [the highlight is mine]
The earth, sea, fire, hail, snow, clouds, mountains, cattle, creeping thing and birds all do what they were designed to do without words. So it is not so much about words as it is doing, the actions, that Yehovah requires for His creations. Yehovah’s word given through Isaiah said:
Therefore my Master said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths and honor Me with their lips, but have removed their hearts far from Me, and their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men. (Isa 29:13)
The Creator, through Moses, does not have much to say about how a man and a woman are to dress. Many people build their doctrines concerning “dress code” based the commentaries / writings of Paul and then try to apply them to all nations. But Yehovah said that we are not to add to or subtract from His word, not Paul’s words nor the word of anyone else, given through Moses.
“You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of Yehovah your, Elohim which I command you.” (Deu 4:2)
“Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.” (Deu 12:32)
So What Does Yehovah Have To Say About His dress Code?
I only see two instance in Torah where Yehovah makes any commands concerning His dress code.
The first has to do with what his Ezrach is to wear; they are to put tassels / tzitzit on the corners of their garments.
[Note: I am not saying all men are to wear these tassels / tzitzit. These instructions are for very special group of men. He tells them to put tassels on the corners of the garments. No matter what their garments might be.]
“Again Yehovah spoke to Moses, saying; ‘Speak to Israel’s seed: Tell them to make tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and to put a blue thread in the tassels of the corners. And you shall have the tassel, that you may look upon it and remember all the commandments of Yehovah and do them, and that you may not follow the harlotry to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined, and that you may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your Elohim’. “Â (Num 15:37-41)
Many will tell you these tassels can only be on a four-cornered garment. I disagree. Yehovah will gather His people from the four corners of the earth.
“He will set up a banner for the nations, and will assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth”. (Isa 11:12)
Where are the corners of the earth? I think that Yehovah wants the tassels placed so they can be seen by everyone . Then, when Yehovah gathers His sons, His khaw-seed, with their families, people will know why they were selected.
Remember, we הלל Yehovah, for all to see, by shining the light of His word without adding to it or subtracting from it. Like the wind, we do what we were created to do if we are His.
Next time I will discuss the other place where Yehovah talks about His “dress code.”
“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to Yehovah your Elohim (your lawmaker and judge).” (Deu 22:5)
