Most folks just assume they are Yehovah’s special treasure because of some doctrine and tradition of men that they have learned and believed to be true. Some believe it is all about Jesus, or perhaps Yeshua; others believe they are Yehovah’s special treasure because they now keep a few of Yehovah’s ways.
Many things in Torah are not obvious for those who have only a cursory or superficial understanding of Yehovah’s word and ways. But the deeper things concerning His set-apart ways are learned only by those who search for them; just as a man searches for silver and fine gold. His ways are discovered precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little and there a little.
“Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts? For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.” (Isa 28:9-10)
Some, ha – most, believe His special treasure is both men and woman alike, but who does Yehovah’s word actually say that His special treasure is? And where were they when He called them by this name? The word being translated as “special treasure” or “jewel” is the Hebrew word “segullah” [סגלה].
Here is what WordStudy has to say about this word.
H5459
סגלה
seg̱ullaÌ„h: A feminine noun meaning a personal possession, a special possession, property. This noun is used only six times, but it gives one of the most memorable depictions of the Lord’s relationship to His people and the place established for them.
The special treasure is property that Yehovah holds near and dear to himself and never lets it out of His sight. This property does not belong to any other lawmaker and judge. Nobody who belonged to Pharaoh or is a citizen of any other country is considered Yehovah’s property; a man can only serve one master. So here is the first place that Yehovah speaks of His special treasure, and a couple of others. Look carefully for who His special treasure actually is.
Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure [סגלה] to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to Israel’s son/seed [×‘× ×™ ישׂר×ל, beni Israel a.k.a.
the children of Israel]” (Exo 19:5-6)“For you are a holy people to Yehovah your Elohim [your lawmaker and judge]; Yehovah your Elohim has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure [סגלה] above all the peoples on the face of the earth. (Deu 7:6)
“They shall be Mine,” says Yehovah of hosts, “On the day that I make them a special treasure [סגלה]. And I will spare them as a man [×יש×] spares his own son [×‘× ×•] who serves him.” (Mal 3:17)
Now look at this.
Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says Yehovah: “my son [×‘× ×™ ] is My firstborn [בכרי, bek-ore] is Israel.” (Exo 4:22)
So what are some of the things that Yehovah’s special treasure is called and some of their characteristics?
- They hear and obey his voice [women, children and servants obey their man/master].
- They are the plural “he,” his son, Israel.
- The are called ×‘× ×™ ישׂר×ל [beni Israel]
- And they are also the “your” in “Yehovah, your Elohim.”
- They are a kingdom of priests [FYI – there are no lady priests].
- They are His bek-ore, His firstborn [this word only applies to males].
- They serve only him, as a son serves his father.
In past weeks we have been discussing what I like to call the “context clues” in Yehovah’s word that describe the Ezrach; one of the two kinds of men in Yehovah’s kingdom. The commandments were given to the Ezrach, Israel’s son/seed, His spiritually born men who have entered into covenant with Him and became His firstborn at Passover; not their sons or their male servants nor even their Ger who dwell with them, and especially not any of their women.
His special treasure obeys only Him and are His holy people, set-apart from all the nations of the earth. The women and children and servants who belong to the special treasure, serve them; and the ger who dwells with the special treasure are in training to become Yehovah’s special treasure at the very next Passover.
Here is our discussion on Deuteronomy 7. So much to learn, so little time.
