Abram’s Birth – A Sign In The Heavens

Oh – sometime I feel so cheated in the coverage, really lack of coverage, which Torah gives to some subjects. Today is a perfect example of what I am talking about. Torah does not introduce Abram until the end of Genesis chapter 11 when he (at 52 years of age) takes Sarai as his woman in Ur, and then again in Genesis 12 when he leaves his family in Haran and goes to Canaan (for the 2nd time) in his 75th year.

Abram’s Birth

But the book of Yasher records the very night of Abram’s birth in Nimrod’s kingdom.

Abraham's birthYasher 8:1 And it was in the night of Abram’s birth, that all the servants of Terah, and all the wise men of Nimrod, and his conjurors came and ate and drank in the house of Terah, and they rejoiced with him on that night.
2 And when all the wise men and conjurors went out from the house of Terah, they lifted up their eyes toward heaven that night to look at the stars, and they saw, and behold one very large star came from the east and ran in the heavens, and he swallowed up the four stars from the four sides of the heavens.
3 And all the wise men of the king and his conjurors were astonished at the sight, and the sages understood this matter, and they knew its import.
4 And they said to each other, “This only betokens the child that has been born to Terah this night, who will grow up and be fruitful, and multiply, and possess all the earth, he and his children for ever, and he and his seed will slay great kings, and inherit their lands.”

Joseph’s Brothers Are Tested

When Joseph’s brothers return, they bring Benjamin and a message from their father, Jacob. Joseph is twice moved to tears and is forced to remove himself from their presence. But Joseph has decided that before he can trust his brothers again they must be tested. Will Joseph’s brothers now fight for their brother?

Yasher 53:8 And Joseph read the letter and knew his father’s writing, and he wished to weep and he went into an inner room and he wept a great weeping; and he went out.
9 And he lifted up his eyes and beheld his brother Benjamin, and he said, Is this your brother of whom you spoke unto me? And Benjamin approached Joseph, and Joseph placed his hand upon his head and he said unto him, May Elohim be gracious unto thee my son.
10 And when Joseph saw his brother, the son of his mother, he again wished to weep, and he entered the chamber, and he wept there, and he washed his face, and went out and refrained from weeping, and he said, Prepare food.

Few people understand that while Benjamin is the youngest of Joseph’s brothers, he (30) has 2 women of worth and 10 sons.

Yasher 53:17 And Joseph said unto him, Hast thou begotten any children? and he said, Thy servant has ten sons, and these are their names, Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Achi, Rosh, Mupim, Chupim, and Ord, and I called their names after my brother whom I have not seen.

Yasher 45:21 And Jacob sent to Aram, the son of Zoba, the son of Terah, and he took for his son Benjamin Mechalia the daughter of Aram, and she came to the land of Canaan to the house of Jacob; and Benjamin was ten years old when he took Mechalia the daughter of Aram for his woman.
22 And Mechalia conceived and bare unto Benjamin Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera and Naaman, five sons; and Benjamin went afterward and took for a woman Aribath, the daughter of Shomron, the son of Abraham, in addition to his first woman, and he was eighteen years old; and Aribath bare unto Benjamin Achi, Rosh, Mupim, Chupim, and Ord; five sons.

The Benjamin’s sons were Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. (Gen 46:21)

In Yasher Joseph reveals himself only to Benjamin before he tests his brothers.

Yasher 53:21 And Benjamin said unto Joseph, I can see by this that Joseph my brother sits here with me upon the throne, and Joseph said unto him, I am Joseph thy brother, reveal not this thing unto thy brethren; behold I will send thee with them when they go away, and I will command them to be brought back again into the city, and I will take thee away from them.
22 And if they dare their lives and fight for thee, then shall I know that they have repented of what they did unto me, and I will make myself known to them, and if they forsake thee when I take thee, then shalt thou remain with me, and I will wrangle with them, and they shall go away, and I will not become known to them.

Well, “dare their lives and fight for thee” is a vast understatement! We all have read the story of how Joseph had his silver cup hidden in Benjamin’s grain sack and how he planned to take Benjamin from his brothers and make him his slave. What we do not see in Genesis is the brouhaha that these mighty men of Elohim cause as they threaten Joseph, his family and the entire nation of Egypt with complete and utter destruction if they do not get their brother Benjamin back. Here is an example of what you have to look forward to if you listen to this audio.

Joseph’s Brothers Will Fight

Yasher 53:28 And Judah’s anger was kindled, and he said, This man has only brought me back to destroy Egypt this day.

Yasher 53:32 And Joseph rose up and caught hold of Benjamin and took him from his brethren with violence, and he came to the house and locked the door, and Joseph commanded him who was set over his house that he should say unto them, Thus saith the king, Go in peace to your father, behold I have taken the man in whose hand my cup was found.

Death Of Isaac

death of IsaacJust before the death of Isaac

It was just before the death of Isaac that two mortal enemies came to together to say goodbye to their father; Jacob, the man of the spirit and Esau, a total man of the flesh. All Torah has to say about the death of Isaac are these words.

Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. So Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. (Gen 35:28-29)

That is it! And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him. What a rip-off; Torah hardly gives a clue as to the vast differences between these to brothers. The book of Yasher, on the other hand, gives the rest of the story. Listen to the blessings which Isaac speaks to his two very different sons.

Yasher 47:5 And Isaac placed his hands upon all Jacob’s sons, and he took hold of them and embraced them, and kissed them one by one, and Isaac blessed them on that day, and he said unto them, May the Elohim of your fathers bless you and increase your seed like the stars of heaven for number.
6 And Isaac also blessed Esau’s sons, saying, May Elohim cause you to be a dread and a terror to all that will behold you, and to all your enemies.

At The Death Of Isaac

The last words that Isaac spoke were words that he received from Yehovah for Jacob and His sons, not Esau. Continue reading Death Of Isaac

Jacob Receives The Promise

Jacob receives the promise, Genesis 29,Genesis 30, Yasher 30, Yasher 31,Jacob was sheckleless and alone when he arrived in Haran. As we saw last time, all he had was Yehovah’s Promise. It took twenty year, but Jacob receives the promise.

Jacob served Laban for seven years and then took the twins (28), first Leah and then Rachel a week later, he was 84. Over the next 7 years all his sons (except Benjamin) would be born to him. And during these same 14 years Laban also had been blessed in sons and daughters, riches.

Yasher 31:24 At that time, the other seven years which Jacob served Laban for Rachel were completed, and it was at the end of fourteen years that he had dwelt in Haran that Jacob said unto Laban, give me my women and send me away, that I may go to my land, for behold my mother did send unto me from the land at Canaan that I should return to my father’s house.
25 And Laban said unto him, Not so I pray thee; if I have found favor in thy sight do not leave me; appoint me thy wages and I will give them, and remain with me.

Give me my women and my children for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you know my service which I have done for you.” And Laban said to him, “Please stay, if I have found favor in your eyes, for I have learned by experience that Yehovah has blessed me for your sake.” (Gen 30:26-27)

Esau Hates Jacob

ESau hates JacobEsau hates Jacob, and he always will! The man who lives out his life in the flesh, will always hate the man who lives his life in the spirit. Esau was circumcised, he knew many of the commandments of Yehovah; BUT, he did not know Yehovah or serve Him.

An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, and he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked. (Pro 29:27)

The righteous perishes, and no man takes it to heart; merciful men are taken away, while no one considers that the righteous is taken away from evil. (Isa 57:1)

Esau hates Jacob and tries to thwart him at every opportunity. Today we will see that he tried to kill Jacob after he received the blessing, when he came back from hiding at the house of Eber and while on his way to Haran.
